About Sights – Narikala Fortress
Narikala (Georgian: ნარიყალა) is an ancient fortress on a steep hill overlooking Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and the Mtkvari River.
The fortress was established in the 4th century and considerably expanded over subsequent centuries. Much of what remains today dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1827, parts of the fortress were damaged by an earthquake and demolished.
What can you see there? Much of the castle is in ruins but there are spectacular views of the city from the battlements. Some of the steps that lead to the top of the walls are steep and narrow and might not be accessible to everyone.
The main feature of the fortress is St. Nicolas church that stands in the lower court. Newly built (1996-1997), it replaces the original 13th century church that was destroyed in a fire. The new church is of “prescribed cross” type, having doors on three sides.
How much is the entry fee? Entry to the fortress is free.
On the way out you may be persuaded to part with a few coins for a religious picture from the lady who sits at the exit!
How to get there? The fastest way to reach the fortress is to use the newly opened aerial tramway from the terminus at Rike Park, on the bank of the Mtkvari river opposite the Old Town. A single journey costs 1 GEL.

WOW!!! Was there ever a big seige or battle at the castle? You have some amazing historical sites… I would love to learn more about the history of Georgia!
The citadel was attacked many times by foreign invaders Chuck and many times restored by the Georgians.
