About Development – Tbilisi Sea
Tbilisi is about 278 km (173 miles) from the sea but Tbilisians don’t have to travel that far to sunbathe on a beach – they go to Tbilisi Sea.
Located to the north-east of the city, Tbilisi Sea (Georgian: თბილისის ზღვა) is a large artificial lake just 20 minutes drive from the city center.
It is a little bit higher than the town, making it one of the most popular destinations for swimming and sunbathing in the summer time for residents and visitors to Tbilisi.
Georgia About was at Tbilisi Sea today and enjoyed the warm water and wonderful views.
Tbilisi City Hall has announced a plan to develop the area. A project, called “Tbilisi Recreational Zone” will create large green spaces, recreational facilities, new housing and hotel development.
One of the major features will be a water park, sports and recreational complex, which is expected to open in 2013.
Built to international standards it will have the capacity to serve 800,000 visitors per annum.
The project will also see the existing city centre zoo replaced by a zoological complex adjacent to the lake.
Georgia About is looking forward to the new Tbilisi Sea facilities!

I love the new plans! Looks great!
We are really looking forward to it! 🙂
We can’t wait to visit!
Love the beautiful blue/green of the sea, it looks so inviting!
The water is warm because we are in the middle of a long hot summer! Perfect for swimming and cooling off 🙂
We swam in it today – it was lovely and warm.
I find this a most beautiful country. I have to save up because some day I have to see this wonderful place that fought so hard to become one in it’s self. The sea so gorgeous, the landscape so enticing. And of course the people and wonderful dog and cat that I have met here are just “peaches and cream”. Thanks you for sharing such a beautiful place and beautiful friendship online.
Thank you for your wonderful comments Diane. I am so pleased that you like our country and want to visit some day. You would receive a great welcome!
Wow…..the “Tbilisi Recreational Zone” sounds very exciting! Especially a zoological complex adjacent to the lake will be fab! The blue sky and sea are breathtaking! 🙂
I’ve seen the concept design for the zoological complex Kevin – it looks amazing!
Better beach than here in Holland!
We like it – especially as it is only 20 minutes from our house!
It looks like a great place to swim so close to where you live. It sounds like it will be even more awesome when all the improvements are completed.
I think it will be a fantastic place Bongo – we can’t wait to try the new facilities!
Wow — that’s an amazing place, even without the new development. But that will make it all the more attractive. I’m with Diane: I think I need to save my money too, because Georgia would be a beautiful place to visit!
Come and see us Lisa!
Your Georgia is so beautiful. Can dogs go to the lake? hint hint (did you bring Bassa?) LOL
It’s too hot at the moment to take Bassa Jodi but we will do in the Autumn.
Beautiful views and nice project!
Thank you Annie, we are looking forward to it opening.
Way to go!!! Beautiful and utilizing it for recreations is fantastic!
The animals at the city zoo will be moved to a new zoological complex adjacent to the lake Chuck. I’ve see the concept design – it will be great!
