About Sights – Sataplia Cave
The Sataplia Nature Reserve is located in Tskaltubo district, about 260 km. from Tbilisi.
Established in 1935 to protect the Sataplia Cave and dinosaur footprints found in the area, this visitor attraction recently benefited from a very attractive refurbishment of its Sataplia Cave visitor center.
Sataplia Cave is named after Sataplia Mountain, which gained its name from the local tradition of collecting honey from the bees that inhabit the mountain’s southern slope. Sataplia means ‘place of honey’.
A Conservation Center and Museum have been constructed, together with glass walkways, viewing points, a cafeteria and other visitor amenities.
On the way to the cave you will see dinosaurs!
Sataplia Cave is 900 m long, 10 m high and 12 m wide and contains dramatically lit stalactites and stalagmites.
The visitor path through the cave is 314 meters long and is equipped with handrails.
Audio and colorful visual effects enhance the natural beauty of the stalactites and stalagmites.

The cave’s micro climate is protected by the use of a cold lighting system.
The entrance and exit are made of glass to help ensure a static temperature inside the cave.

How to get there? The closest town is Kutaisi (Georgian: ქუთაისი), Georgia’s second largest city. The cave is a 45min drive from the town square (about 15 Lari taxi fare). Driving from Tbilisi will probably take 3 hours.
How much does it cost? The entrance fee is 6 Lari.
The Sataplia Cave is amazing and the new Visitor Center is well designed and has excellent amenities. Aside from visiting the cave you can wander through the forest trails and enjoy the natural wonders of this beautiful nature reserve.

Oh, my goodness! What an amazing place. My boys would have loved a field trip to a place like this back when we were home schooling and studying dinosaurs. I am still just in awe of the beautiful places there in Georgia. Hugs

Hi, I believe that the cave is closed on Tuesdays. Opening hours differ depending on the time of year. At this time of year it probably opens at 10.00 a.m. and closes at 5.00 p.m.

I visited this place on 23rd March 2019 morning 11:30am, some parts of the park was closed as some maintenance work was going on. But because we have traveled from a different country we wanted to pay and see whatever is available in the park for visitors. So I decided to pay and buy tickets, the lady at the counter asked me to wait for guide. I saw the guides were very reluctant to come, sitting busy with their phones. Than a lady finally got up to take us, she was very rude not at all interested in her work with great difficulty she took us to the dinosaurs foot prints and said that is it. I wanted to walk around the park but because she was not interested in the walk with us she said we have to leave, I did not agree and was very upset with her rude behavior then she spoke to her manager and then said we can go and she left. I think people working in such positions are actually the face of a country for foreigners because their tour experience is highly dependent on these people we interact and form an opinion about the country and places we visited. I suggest people with passion for their work must be in such positions who can enhance the visitors experience not otherwise.
